Women & Girls Cricket in Sussex

Over the last 10 years we have seen the Women and Girls game evolve and grow, nationally as well as in Sussex, with more women and girls playing at grassroots level than ever before, and the standard at County level has improved considerably.

Sussex is one of the leading Counties in the Women & Girls game from our grassroots programmes through to our County system.

For all information on Women & Girls Cricket in Sussex please contact our Women & Girls Development Officer and Director of Sussex Women’s Cricket, Charlotte Burton.

School Cricket

We run a number of school leagues and competitions throughout the year for all schools, state and independent, for girls to be involved in.

During the winter we run the Lady Taverners under 13 and under 15 Indoor competitions from January through to March.

During the summer months we hold the following competitions:

Year 6 girls Kwik cricket tournaments, the under 13 and under 15 softball leagues, ‘Chance to Compete’ tournaments, an under 15 hardball tournaments, and a prep school under 13 festival.

Club Cricket

We have a large number of clubs around the county with either a Women or Girls section, or both. We continue to help develop those clubs, as well as helping new clubs start a Women and Girls section at their club.

We run leagues and competitions throughout the year for all clubs to be involved in.

During the winter we hold Indoor leagues for under 13s, 15s and Women.

In the summer we run a softball league for the under 11s as well as the Lady Taverners under 11.

We start hardball cricket at under 13 , with a league involving a pairs league and an under 13 T20 league, along with an under 15 T20 league.

For the Women’s clubs we hold a T20 league and a development T20 competition for clubs not involved in the Southern league.

We currently have one club involved in the premier Southern league and six teams in the County playing in the Women’s Southern league.

County Cricket

Women & Girls county cricket is run by the Sussex Women’s Cricket Association (SWCA), which is a separate organisation that reports into the Sussex Cricket Foundation.

Each year we run County trials for all age groups, which take place in October.

We currently run seven County squads, under 11s, 12s, 13s, 15s, 17s, 19s and Women, with the under 13s, 15s, 17s and Women all playing in the County Cup and the 15s, 17s and Women playing in the T20 competition all run by the ECB.

Sussex County Women & Girls have been one of the leading Counties of the last ten years, with the Women winning the County Championship six times in the last eleven years as well as winning the T20 in 2013 and 2015.

The County girls are also a formidable force with the Sussex under 17s winning the County Championship three times in the last six years, with 2013 being an outstanding year with the under 17s winning the double, the Championship and the T20.
