Sussex Cricket Foundation supports the British Airways ‘Sport Relief Day’ at Gatwick Airport

On Friday the 18th March, the Sussex Cricket Foundation team supported the British Airways ‘Sports Relief Day’. Joined by Sid the Shark and armed with their inflatables, the Sussex Cricket Foundation coaches headed to Gatwick for a day of fun and play!

The team set up their kit at the North Terminal of Gatwick Airport, with the aim of providing some light relief to the waiting travellers. They were delighted to be joined by ex-England Cricket Captain David Gower, who came along to share his expertise and to support the British Airways event for Sport Relief. Along with many others he also tried his hand with the batting and bowling inflatables on offer.

The SCF team were well received by all at Gatwick airport, providing something different and fun, and a HUGE thank you to all those who got involved with the activities and helped raise money for Sport Relief.

Thank you to Terry Burton, Investigation and Security advisor at British Airways who pulled the event together and said “what a fabulous morning we had at Gatwick Airport enjoyed by so many people. A massive thank you to all British Airways Staff, coaches from Sussex Cricket, David Gower the ex-England Cricket Captain plus Sid the Shark for the Cricket Roadshow, where over £1,200 was raised for such a worthwhile cause ‘Sport Relief Day’.”

Steve Feazey, Cricket Development Manager at SCF spoke about the recent Gatwick event. “We were delighted to be invited by British Airways to support their Sport Relief event at Gatwick Airport. The opportunity to showcase our charity in the North Terminal and support such a worthy cause is an opportunity that doesn’t come around very often. We have a responsibility to engage with commercial organisations and community groups across the county, and to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to have a positive experience of cricket, which can be anything from volunteering at a local hub, playing in your local community, to watching a game at the 1st Central County Ground in Hove.”

Along with the SCF activities, the British Airways Sport Relief Day was supported by a number of other activities and bucket collections throughout the Airport, and the generosity of the passing travellers helped to raise such a fantastic amount.

SCF coaches & inflatables hit the road

The Sussex Cricket Foundation team went out on the road this weekend to promote the start of the season, and provide some fun activities for the kids over the Easter holidays.

Their first stop on Friday 1st April was Brighton’s Churchill Square shopping centre, where they entertained over 350 young people with the help of the Sussex Cricket Roadshow inflatables, and our very own Sid the Shark, who was on hand to help out the coaches. The coaches ran a competition to see who was the most accurate at throwing with the winner being awarded a family voucher to attend a NatWest T20 Blast match at Hove this season.

As well as talking about opportunities to come and see Sussex play at Hove during the 2016 season, the promotional event was used to spread the word about Sussex Cricket’s new charity arm, Sussex Cricket Foundation, which uses the power of cricket to help create better futures and stronger communities for the people in Sussex.

The second stop on Saturday 2nd April was to join Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club at the AMEX stadium for their home match against Burnley. It was a fantastic day, with Brighton’s biggest attendance of the season so far. It was a great way to remind the football fans that as their season draws to a close they can still experience first class sport over the summer with Sussex County Cricket Club’s fixtures, whilst having a bit of fun waiting for the match to start.
